The Opportunity

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), in the heart of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, is a private university with over 5,225 employees, 1,300 faculty, 795 medical students, 440 graduate students, 825 physicians in residency and fellowship programs and 13,500 alumni. It is ranked 46th among medical schools in NIH grants with $92.3MM in research funding, placing it in the upper half of the nation’s medical schools. In FY 2006-2007, the school received a total of $143MM in external support for teaching, research and training. Patient services are provided through Medical College Physicians and Children’s Specialty Group. In-patient care is provided at MCW’s affiliated hospitals: Froedtert Lutheran Memorial Hospital, Zablocki VA Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, one of the nation’s top 10 children’s hospitals. The Medical College of Wisconsin’s visibility and growth opportunities have recently expanded in light of the St. Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend Clinic and SynergyHealth Foundation affiliation agreement with Froedtert & Community Health.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a Department Administrator to work with the department chairman and the senior executive leadership group at MCW in strategic planning and department operations to achieve planned growth and advancement in clinical care delivery, research, education, productivity and community engagement. As one of the first new leaders to be added to support the recently appointed dean’s emerging model, this department administrator will work to increase not only department efficacy, but will also seek opportunities for integration of mission/collaboration across all academic departments, the community and the academic research community in Wisconsin.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree and five years of management experience. A master’s degree is strongly preferred, while experience in a decentralized matrix environment is a plus. Additionally, top candidates must demonstrate success working to create productive relationships with external organizations in research, education and care delivery. Experience in developing systems and practices to further the cause of translational research is highly desirable. The next department administrator must be an innovative leader of a driven, disciplined style who is adept at inculcating sophisticated measurement and monitoring tools into daily operating standards of accountability, and demonstrating capacity to expand his/her span of responsibility and influence.
