Clinical Nurse Specialist, Neurological Service Line

The Organization

Southern Illinois Health System (SIH) is a three hospital organization providing full healthcare service to the residents of southern Illinois.  It is comprised of the flagship Memorial Hospital of Carbondale with 153 beds, 104-bed Herrin Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, a critical access hospital serving a rural community. The System is very successful financially and is growing both in volume and service offerings.  Memorial Hospital of Carbondale is a Top 100 Heart Hospital that includes a nationally acclaimed acute rehab service treating both neurological and orthopedic patients and the largest birthing center south of Springfield.  It is also the only Level II-plus neonatal intensive care unit and the only pediatric unit in the southern area of the state.   The System is affiliated with the Southern Illinois University Family Practice Residency program.

Following an intensive study by a national consulting firm, SIH has committed to expanding both the depth and breadth of its neurological service line.  With two extremely busy neurosurgeons already on board, a third surgeon will join the hospital in the summer of 2010.  A neurologist is the center point of the certified Stroke Center that is in the early stages of development.

To assure a superlative patient experience, Southern Illinois Health System is seeking a clinical nurse specialist to serve as the clinical expert in neurological services, across the continuum, from outpatient to rehab. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will work with the Stroke Center Coordinator, the ICU Director, nursing staff and medical staff to develop, implement, and evaluate

nursing standards of practice.  S/he will also develop and implement educational materials and discharge planning programs, provide consultative services to health team members and the community, and research best practices in neurology care.
